This post is being written to conclude and recap my series on the handling of rape and sexual assault charges in Peoria, Illinois. I felt it was necessary to write on this topic due to the fact that, for obvious reasons, most individuals do not know how to proceed after they or a loved one have been arrested. Failing to protect one’s rights, however, can have disastrous consequences. The goal of my last several articles has been to provide information which will help people to more fully understand their situations. It has also been my goal to provide information which will assist with the selection of a criminal defense attorney. If you are in need of assistance then contact my office today to speak with a lawyer.
I have addressed a number of topics over my recent articles. Issues which I have analyzed included:
- How search and seizure issues impact sexual assault charges
- Sexual assault charges which are based on false allegations
- Illinois’ penalties for rape
- Taking a rape case to trial
- What to expect after a sexual assault conviction
I chose to address these topics for multiple reasons. First, it is not uncommon for such cases to involve evidence which the police illegally took from the defendant. It is also not uncommon for such cases to involve Miranda violations. As such, search and seizure issues have a great impact on the outcome of a case. Second, and unfortunately, there are instances in which these types of cases are based on false allegations. It is vital that the defendant still take such matters seriously. Third, it is important to understand the potential penalties for any offense with which one is charged. Fourth, knowing what to expect from the trial process can help to ensure that things go as smoothly as possible. Finally, and importantly, failing to understand the terms of one’s supervision can result in their being incarcerated.
One point I stressed throughout each of these articles is that it is important to retain an attorney who is experienced in handling such matters. Both prosecutors and judges take these types of cases very seriously and little to no leniency is typically shown to defendants. I am a former prosecutor who believes that everyone is entitled to aggressive representation. Contact my office today to speak with a Peoria lawyer if you have been charged with sexual assault.
